GLASSY EYED
This self-portrait was created after moving to Western Australia and reflects the experience of adjusting to a new place and the changes that come with it. The objects in the painting—an olive oil bottle, a teddy-shaped jar, a new plant, and a Banksia baxteri—are small parts of my daily life that have taken on new meaning. Together, they represent comfort, growth, routine, and the unfamiliar.
Looking through and past these objects is a way to explore how our sense of self shifts during times of change. Some things stay the same, while others feel distorted or unfamiliar, much like the reflections and layers within the painting.
This work is about settling in, noticing the small details, and finding a new version of myself in an unfamiliar place. It’s a quiet moment of reflection on what we keep, what changes, and what we grow into.
